Tell Your Academic Senators to Vote Down this Proposal

Posted: November 19, 2013 in Uncategorized

The following item is scheduled to be on the Academic Senate Council’s agenda this Friday for discussion:

•    Provide feedback on changing the composition Academic Senate Council – including a proposal that division chairs be the senators for each division

This is a terrible idea on many levels, including potential conflicts of interest.  Why are we even considering a lessening of the faculty voice in this way? Putting the chairs in this role would create an even larger conduit back to management since the chairs and the deans are often of one mind.  Once again, rank and file faculty will have lost their voice.  And, what about divisions that have no chairs but rather have directors? Also, some chairs stay on as chairs for over a decade.  This could mean that the Senate may have little turnover, losing the vibrance of new voices for faculty.  But, wait.  Why would the Senate suggest this?   Maybe it wants the chairs to do more?  Maybe it can’t get interested people to serve as senators?  Maybe the Senate has lost its vibrance?  I don’t know the answers.  But, there are many reasons to tell your Senators to vote no on this proposal.

This is the first I’ve heard of it. I agree, bad idea.
